FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, June 8, 2003

HAIR-RAISING! As expected, Hairspray was the big winner at Sunday's Tonys, collecting eight awards, including Best Musical and Lead Actor (Harvey Fierstein) and Actress (Marissa Jaret Winokur) in a Musical. Take Me Out, about a gay baseball player who comes out of the closet, was named Best Play.

TONY ADD: Nine picked up the trophy for Best Musical Revival. Long Day's Journey Into Night was Best Revival of Play; its stars, Brian Dennehy and Vanessa Redgrave won the awards for Lead Actor and Actress in a Play.

FAST START: 2 Fast 2 Furious roared in as the new box-office champ with an estimated $52.1 million. In its wake, last week's winner, the fishy 'toon Finding Nemo, remained buoyant with $45.8 million in second.

SHE'S THE ONE: Ed Burns and Christy Turlington tying the knot in San Francisco Saturday at a star-studded ceremony that included Sting and Vin Diesel. Bono gave away the bride.

THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR: La-Z-Boy recliners each designed by the six cast members of Friends auctioned off on eBay for $125,000. The money goes to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

SPEAKING OF CHAIRS... Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson auctioning their autographed American Idol judging chairs to benefit the American Cancer Society.

WOULDN'T HURT A FLY: Former Minnesota governor and current MSNBC host Jesse Ventura questioned by police last week following an alleged altercation with a gadfly in St. Paul. Ventura says he did nothing wrong. No charges have been filed.

BUZZ OFF: Sandra Bullock granted a permanent restraining order against an alleged stalker after the man failed to appear in court today. The order, an extension of a temporary restraining order granted last month, means the Michigan man must stay 200 yards away from the actress and not contact her or her family for three years.

ROCKING OUT: Keanu Reeves making a cameo appearance in Anthrax's upcoming video "Safe Home" from their We've Come for You All album. The Matrix star is a longtime fan.

GOING FOR THE GOLD: NBC shelling out a whopping $2.2 billion for the rights to the 2010 and 2012 Olympics. The Peacock outbid ABC and Fox for the rights.

MUGGLE MAGIC: Scholastic planning a $3 million to $4 million campaign to promote Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when it comes out June 21, including billboards and a countdown in Times Square.

SILVER SPOON: Rick Schroder making his directorial debut with Black Cloud, a Native American boxing drama he wrote starring Tim McGraw. Production is underway in Arizona.

FINDING HIS VOICE: Former Smiths frontman Morrissey signing with Sanctuary Records to record his first album since 1997's Maladjusted.
