FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, June 2, 1997

TOP OF THE NEWS: Bob Dylan left a still-undisclosed hospital in a still-undisclosed city over the weekend and is expected to make a full recovery from the inflammation of the sac surrounding his heart. He should be well in time for the August launch of his North American tour. "I'm just glad to be feeling better," he commented. "I really thought I'd be seeing Elvis soon."

CHART TOPPER: Wu-Tang Clan's double-CD Wu-Tang Forever debuts Tuesday and could be the years' biggest album, hip-hop or otherwise.

PRESUMED DEAD: Police still haven't found the body of singer Jeff Buckley but a statement from his label says he's now presumed dead. Columbia says he was in Memphis to record a new album and jumped into the Mississippi fully clothed while clowning around with a friend. The undertow of a passing boat apparently drowned him.

TITANIC RISING: The entertainment world focused on the Big Apple Sunday for the 51st Tony Awards, with favorite Chicago and dark horse Titanic dominating the glamor prizes. Host Rosie O'Donnell helped boost the show's ratings 35 percent over last year's dismal showing.

DON'T CRY: Madonna will star with Goldie Hawn in Miramax's big-screen version of the musical Chicago. For all the casting news, see The Dotted Line.

DINO-MITE: The Lost World's dinosaurs continue to devour all comers at the box office. Steven Spielberg's flickasaurus earned an estimated $32.6 million over the weekend, more than five times as much as the second place movie, Addicted to Love.

SECOND CHANCE: A judge in Cleveland gave the go-ahed to plea today from the son of Sam Sheppard, the model for The Fugitive movie and TV series, to declare his father innocent of the 1954 murder of his mother.

UNCHARITABLE? The president of the Advertising Council complained that the broadcast networks are shirking their duty to run numerous public service announcements. "PSA time is down to five seconds per network in each primetime hour compared with a no-less dismal 12 seconds just three years ago," said Ruth Wooden.

DEATHS: Adolphus "Doc" Cheatham, the 91-year-old dean of jazz trumpet players, died today in Washington, DC, after suffering a stroke...Pat Collins, the "hip hypnotist", died at 62 in San Bernardino, California, Saturday. She starred in the movie Divorce American Style and made many TV appearances as a hypnotist...Rose Will Monroe, who played "Rosie the Riveter" in a Second World War patriotic movie, died Saturday at 77 in Clarksdale, Indiana. She really was a riveter, and later became a pilot.
