FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, June 23, 2006

FAREWELL: Famed TV producer Aaron Spelling died Friday at his home in Los Angeles at age 83. The man behind Charlie's Angels, Beverly Hills, 90210, Love Boat, 7th Heaven and so many others had suffered a stroke June 18.

LEGALLY OVER: Selma Blair filing for divorce from Ahmet Zappa Wednesday after 29 months of marriage, according to court records. The couple still "love each other very much and will continue to be close friends," according to a statement from their publicist. That'd be a first.

SHUTTERBUGGED: A paparazzo arrested for trespassing Thursday after he was discovered in the bushes outside the daycare attended by Maddox Jolie-Pitt, police said. At this point, Maddox is probably about ready to ham it up for the cameras, just to take some of the focus off the exalted Shiloh Nouvel.

COMING SOON: Paramount and Marvel Comics kicking off the summer 2008 movie season with the release of Iron Man on May 2, 2008. The picture, based on Marvel's iconic superhero, is directed by Jon Favreau and marks Paramount and Marvel's first joint venture.

TRIAL FILE: Part of a lawsuit filed against Phil Spector's former assistant by his accountant tossed out Friday, giving Spector's attorney more time to devise ways to delay the record producer's murder trial even further.

STARRED: Matt Damon, Jamie Foxx, Barbara Walters, The Doors and Mariah Carey among those receiving stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: Eminem, who usually has no problem publicly ranting about on-again, off-again wife Kim Mathers, attending a private divorce hearing Thursday. No details of the meeting were disclosed--maybe the Real Slim Shady's saving it for the lyrics.

DREAM HOUSE: Rob Lowe winning approval to build a massive mansion on his $8.5 million lot in Montecito, California, despite a neighbor's complaint that the project will spoil the view of the Pacific Ocean. Now the neighbor will have a new view of Lowe's west wing.

JUDGED BY ITS COVER: CBS closing the book on Tuesday Night Book Club, a reality show about the members of a Scottsdale, Arizona, book club, after two episodes. Seeing as we almost fell asleep just writing that, we can see why.

STORK WATCH: Philip Seymour Hoffman and his longtime girlfriend, Mimi O'Donnell, expecting their second child together, Us Weekly reports. For a boy, might we suggest Truman? Or perhaps Oscar?

MORE BREEDING: So You Think You Can Dance host Lauren Sanchez and her husband, agent Patrick Whitesell, welcoming their first child, a baby boy, on Thursday, Us Weekly, reports. So, you think you can care?

MEET YOUR NEW ANCHOR: CBS sending Katie Couric on a summer tour of several cities to meet informally with viewers and hear what they want from the evening news. We think this has the makings of a hit reality show.
