FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, June 1, 2006
WOOOOOOO! A week after landing the Idol title, Taylor Hicks making the Soul Patrol proud by signing his record contract with Arista Records in conjunction with 19 Recordings Limited. We can only imagine the whoops of joy and awkward undulations that followed.
PAY UP: The FCC rejecting CBS' request to rescind its proposal to fine the network $550,000 for Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show. We're thinking CBS should just thank its lucky stars Jackson was in pre-weight-gain mode at the time; otherwise there would have been a lot more to flash and, perhaps, a correspondingly larger fine.
KEEP KEEPING AWAY: Sandra Bullock apparently still not interested in getting personally acquainted with a man she claims has stalked her across several states and sent her unwanted faxes and emails. A judge granting the actress an extension of her restraining order against Thomas James Weldon through June 2009.
OH, BABY: Anna Nicole Smith confirming in a video message on her Website that she is pregnant and stating "everything's going really, really good." We're guessing TrimSpa is already planning a post-pregnancy weight-loss ad campaign.
OUT OF THE BATCLOSET: DC Comics resurrecting the character of Batwoman as a 5-foot-10 superhero, with flowing red locks, knee-high spike-heel red boots, a skintight black outfit and a fiery red cape. And, oh yeah, she's a lesbian. (Now, if only Batman and Robin could come to terms with their sexuality...)
SUPER EARLY: Warner Bros. moving the official release date of Superman Returns up two days to Wednesday, June 28, with the goal of giving the blockbuster a seven-day Fourth of July holiday weekend opening. However, according to ComingSoon.net, the pic will actually premiere in theaters at 10 p.m. on June 27, giving dedicated superhero fans the chance to take in the movie even earlier. We can barely contain our excitement.
CHART ATTACK: The Dixie Chicks topping the charts with Taking the Long Way, with 526,000 units sold. No word on whether the White House was responsible for purchasing one of those units, but somehow we doubt it.
DOT COMMENDABLE: Prince being honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at 10th Annual Webby Awards for his use of the Internet to release his music and connect with fans. What can we say--he would die 4 url.
IT'S HER PARTY: Beyoncé Knowles announcing plans to release her new solo album B'Day internationally on Sept. 4, the day she turns 25, and in the United States on Sept. 5. That's one way to remind people it's your birthday.
JUST SAID NO: In a desperate bid to re-enter the spotlight, Lark Voorhies, the actress who played Lisa Turtle on Saved By the Bell, suing the National Enquirer over a story that claimed she had a drug problem. Even sadder--her lawsuit describes her as a "famous and popular actress," who lost work as a result of the story.
HER NEXT OEUVRE: Sofia Coppola expecting a baby, due this winter, with boyfriend Thomas Mars, per People. We're going to go out on a limb here and guess that this is one baby who will work in the entertainment industry someday. (We know--call us crazy.)
LEGAL BATTLE: A veteran who lost both arms in Iraq suing Michael Moore for using clips from a television interview without his permission in Fahrenheit 9/11 to falsely portray him as anti-war.
