FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, June 12, 2006

THE BORN IDENTITY: Matt Damon and Luciana Bozan welcoming their first child together on Sunday, a daughter named Isabella, People reports. We're guessing he and Brad Pitt will have plenty to talk about on the set of the upcoming Ocean's Thirteen.

IN DEFENSE OF K-FED: Britney Spears defending her marriage to Kevin Federline in an interview scheduled to air on Today and Dateline Thursday. The pop princess called her marriage "awesome" and denied reports that Federline had taken up residence in the basement of their home. Sigh...just when we thought she had finally seen the light.

SHUTTERBUGGED: Meanwhile, Spears and her mother, Lynne, sued by a paparazzo who claims they are responsible for serious injuries he supposedly suffered when he was allegedly struck by their SUV in June 2004.

COMIC GOLD: John Cleese planning to pen a history of stage, film and TV comedy in an effort to "teach young talent some rules of the game," he told London's Times, adding that too much of today's comedy is targeted at "American teenage kids." Well, excuuuuuse us for enjoying our South Park.

STORK WATCH; Jason Bateman and his wife, Anka, expecting their first child together this fall. The actor announced the news on Los Angeles radio station Star 98.7 last week and revealed that the baby is a girl. With that element of surprise taken out of the mix, we will now return to not caring.

NEW MATERIAL: Bob Seger releasing Face the Promise, his first album in 11 years in Sept. 12. The first single, "Wait For Me" will be released ahead of the album, and should provide a barometer as to whether Seger's fans have indeed been waiting.

SICK BAY: Korn forced to cancel the remainder of its European tour, due to lead singer Jonathan Davis coming down with a blood ailment, the band said in a statement. The band is still expected to headline this summer's Family Values Tour.

LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS: The History Boys winning six Tony Awards, including Best Play, Best Actor and Best Director; Jersey Boys winning four Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical. Julia Roberts, who was not nominated for her reviled performance in Three Days of Rain, proving she can act by playing the part of a humble presenter.

ON THE MOVE: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and their three children leaving Namibia after a two-month stay, a government official confirmed Saturday. No word on where the World's Most Beautiful Family was headed, but we're sure they'll surface soon.

HOT WHEELS: Cars topping the box office with a $62.8 million debut, marking a seventh straight number one opening for Pixar and Disney and driving the weekend box office up 8 percent over the same weekend last year, which marked the debut of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. How time flies.

BATTLE FOR IRELAND: A judge requesting that Alec Baldwin be evaluated by a psychologist to determine whether he is attempting to turn his daughter, Ireland, against his ex-wife, Kim Basinger. Baldwin has previously asked that Basinger undergo a psychological evaluation. As for 10-year-old Ireland, we're betting she's just counting down the days to her 18th birthday.

BEHIND THE WHEEL: Paris Hilton caught on tape by TMZ.com as she backed her Range Rover into a parked Honda Civic on Thursday and then drove away. Hilton's rep, Elliot Mintz, denying she did anything wrong, claiming she left information about where to reach her with the parking attendant. "Paris is a very responsible and a very good driver," Mintz told the AP. "She takes her driving seriously." We'd hate to see what would happen if she took her driving lightly.

WEDDING BELLS: Oliver Hudson, son of Goldie Hawn and brother of Kate Hudson, tying the knot with longtime girlfriend Erinn Bartlett on Friday, People magazine reported.

BACK ON THE JOB: Charlie Rose returning to PBS Monday in his first broadcast since undergoing heart surgery in March.
