ROBOTS RULE: Steven Spielberg's A.I.: Artificial Intelligence plugged in first at the box office with $29.4 million, according to final studio figure Monday.

STILL TALKING: Although their contracts expired Saturday at midnight, the two actors unions reportedly closing in on a new three-year agreement with Hollywood producers. Negotiators worked until late Sunday night and are reconvening Monday morning. A deal could be announced any time.

PAYING TRIBUTE: Billy Wilder, Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas, Kevin Spacey, Gregory Peck and Sidney Poitier among those gathering Sunday in Los Angeles for a private funeral for the late Jack Lemmon, who died Wednesday at age 76. A public memorial service will take place later this week.

REMEMBERED: Tenor saxophonist and four-time Grammy winner Joe Henderson succumbing to heart failure on Saturday in San Francisco following a struggle with emphysema. He was 64.

CODA: Nashville guitar god Chet Atkins, whose masterful fingerpicking accompanied the likes of Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers and Hank Williams, died Saturday after a long bout with cancer. He was 77.

X-ITING? Gillian Anderson telling the London Times she's through with The X-Files after next season. She says she wants to spend more time with her young daughter, Piper.

COVER HIM BAD: Songstress Tori Amos covering Eminem's song, " '97 Bonnie and Clyde," in which he raps about killing his wife. The song will be included on Amos' album of covers, Strange Little Girls, due out in September.

SHADY CONTROVERSY: A conservative politician and a family lobby group calling on the Australian government to bar rap star Eminem from entering Australia later this month as part of his upcoming tour.

WILD MAN BLUES: Woody Allen going on tour with his New York-based jazz band to promote his new film, Curse of the Jade Scorpion. Allen, who plays the clarinet, will bring his band to the West Coast for performances that will benefit local music charities, as well as introduce the screenings in each city.

SIMPLY THE BEST: Taiwanese film director Ang Lee hailed as America's best director by Time magazine in its first ever "America's Best" series, which hits newsstands on Monday.

ROLLED BACK: MGM pushing back director John McTiernan's remake of Rollerball from this August to the beginning of 2002 so the studio can capitalize with a better marketing plan.

RAP THRILLER: Michael Jackson joining Jay-Z on stage Thursday at New York's Hot 97 radio station's summer jam event. The King of Pop was introduced during the rapper's "H to the Izzo," which samples the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back."

CINEMATIC SAVIOR: Actress Patricia Neal among several hundred people hoping to save a movie theater in Omaha, Nebraska. The theater, capable of showing big-screen Cinerama films, is supposed to be destroyed. Neal wrote a letter of support that was published in the Omaha World-Herald Sunday.

BACK IN ACTION: Donny Osmond hosting a revamped version of the Pyramid game show. Unlike its predecessor, $25,000 Pyramid, the show's called simply Pyramid because producers have yet to select the exact amount for the top prize.
