WITH A BULLET: Saving Private Ryan outgunned The Parent Trap at the box office. Steven Spielberg's war opus earned $23.3 million in its second week.

STAT OF THE DAY: Box-office receipts from July were a record $812.8 million. More than 170 million tickets were sold during the month.

BEST BUY: Best Buy will hand out a limited-edition, 17-song live Pearl Jam CD with each purchase of the band's new video, Single Video Theory, which goes on sale tomorrow.

BRUUUCE! Bruce Springsteen said to be working on a six-CD box set of previously unreleased tunes. He's also reportedly prepping a 1999 reunion tour with the E-Street Band.

BRUCE ADD: Springsteen to celebrate his quarter-century of rock-bossdom in 1999 and is considered a lock for next year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

TAXMAN: Paul McCartney tops Q mag's list of richest British rockers. Macca's fortune is estimated north of $820 million.

DIAL "M" FOR MAILBOX: The U.S. Post Office issues its black-and-white Alfred Hitchcock stamp today.
