SO SORRY: Mel Gibson admitting to making anti-Jewish remarks and asking for help from the Jewish community in recovering ftom his alcohol addiction. "Please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith," Gibson said. The actor-producer is scheduled to be arraigned on drunken driving charges Sept. 28.

BACKLASH BEGINS: ABC yanking a Holocaust miniseries it was developing with Mel Gibson's production company. Meanwhile, top Hollywood agent Ari Emanuel issuing a statement on the Huffington Post asking his colleagues to stop working with Gibson. Disney, on the other hand, stating it still plans to release Gibson's Apocolypto on Dec. 8 as scheduled.

MORE MEL: An independent review committee finding no evidence that Gibson was given preferential treatment by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department at the time of his arrest. Guy can't catch a break.

THIS ONE TIME, AT STAGE CAMP? Stagedoor Manor, the summer theater camp made famous by the movie Camp, landing the first stage production of Disney's original movie, High School Musical.

THE JOKE'S ON: Heath Ledger signing on to play Batman's nemesis The Joker in The Dark Night, the next installment of the Batman franchise. So far, Michelle Williams not joining the cast--but give it time.

MOVING ON: Meat Loaf dropping his multimillion dollar lawsuit against songwriter Jim Steinman, whom he had accused of wrongfully registering the phrase "Bat Out of Hell" as his trademark in 1995. "We're not going to have a knock-down brawl. We just have too much history," the singer said. In other words, he'll do anything for cash (but he won't do that).

ON THE JOB: Katie Couric making her prime-time CBS News debut on Sept. 6 with a one-hour special tied to the fifth anniversary of Sept. 11, the network announced Monday. That should give her a chance to prove she can project an image other than "perky."

WEDDING BELLS: Elizabeth Hurley telling the Italian edition of Vanity Fair that she plans to marry her boyfriend, Arun Nayar, very soon and that the twosome are considering having a child. Okay, wake us up when you're getting married in a string bikini on a yacht or adopting a baby from some exotic locale, otherwise...zzzzzzzz.

YARD SALE: Cher auctioning off about 700 items from her home, including her bed, her 2003 Hummer and numerous Bob Mackie costumes in a sale expected to raise more than $1 million. Apparently, she's trying to turn back time and start over.

PAY UP: Wesley Snipes' former talent agency suing the actor for more than $2 million in back commissions from films including Blade: Trinity.
