FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, April 5, 2004

RED HEAD: The comic book superhero beastie tale Hellboy topped the weekend box-office as the new number one movie, walking tall over all competition with an estimated $23.5 million.

UNLUCKY IN LOVE: A judge denying a motion to suppress evidence in the case against Courtney Love, clearing the way for the rocker's April 16 trial on charges of disorderly contact and being under the influence of a controlled substance. The prosecution called the ruling "vital" to the case.

SPOILED FOOD: Celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito filing a countersuit against investors in his television restaurant, accusing them of cooking the books. China Grill Management sued DiSpirito in February, alleging that he mismanaged the eatery featured in NBC's The Restaurant.

SUGAR SHACK: Sugar Ray to appear in On the Road, a reality show for Spike TV in which contestants will tour with the band and compete for a car and a job at a record label. Frontman Mark McGrath described the show as a cross between The Real World and The Apprentice.

OFF THE HOOK: A judge deciding Diana Ross won't have to spend more time behind bars for her DUI conviction even though authorities released her 90 minutes early from a 48-hour jail sentence.

TIMES ARE A CHANGING: Bob Dylan appearing in a Victoria's Secret commercial shot in Venice to the backdrop of his 1997 hit "Love Sick."

PAPA DON'T PREACH: Heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne and wife Sharon on Friday telling CNN's Larry King that 19-year-old daughter Kelly entered a California drug rehabilitation clinic earlier in the day to deal with her abuse of painkillers.

PROBLEMS OF HIS OWN: Ozzy Osbourne filing a complaint with California's state medical board accusing his doctor of overprescribing drugs that left the rocker dazed and confused.

SPIDEY SENSES TINGLING: A Spider-Man 2 trailer unrolling at two and a half minutes on NBC during an episode of The Apprentice Thursday night before hitting theaters Friday.

MAD DAD: Coldplay's Chris Martin may be charged next week for allegedly kicking a photographer outside a London restaurant as Martin and his pregnant wife Gwyneth Paltrow were leaving the trendy eatery, Sky News reports.

TV BABIES: Preschoolers have about 10 percent more likelihood of developing attention deficit disorder with each hour of TV they watch per day, according to a study in Pediatrics magazine.

BLING BLING UP FOR BIDS: Kim Basinger auctioning off some of the baubles Alec Baldwin gave her during their nine-year marriage, reports New York's Daily News, including a Tiffany engagement ring valued between $30,000-$40,000, with proceeds to benefit the Performing Animal Welfare Society.

NEAR MISS: Dyan Cannon (Ally McBeal) escaping an early morning blaze in her Los Angeles condo Sunday morning. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Meanwhile, the 67-year-old actress was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation but was reported in good condition.

LAID TO REST: Sir Peter Ustinov, the acclaimed British actor, author and raconteur who won two Oscars including one for Spartacus and wrote numerous plays, was buried Saturday in Switzerland.

NOT SO WONDERFUL: Fox canceling the underviewed Wonderfalls after only four episodes despite critical acclaim.

BYE FOR NOW: Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick ending their run on Broadway's The Producers Sunday night. The two will now star in the big screen version, expected to hit theaters in 2005.

FOR THE KIDS: Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz hosting the 17th annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday at UCLA's Pauley Pavillion in Los Angeles. Myers ended the event getting drenched in slime, a long-held Nick tradition.

IT'S BACK! The Lollapalooza Tour will hit the road again in July with a new two-day format and will feature such acts as The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, String Cheese Incident, Morrisey and Polyphonic Spree.
