FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, April 18, 2004

A KILLING: Kill Bill: Volume 2 topped the weekend box office, earning an estimated $25.5 million, slightly more that the $22 million debut of Volume 1 last October.

KUDOS: Ricky Gervais won awards for Best Comedy Performance and Best Sitcom for The Office at Sunday's British Academy TV Awards, Britain's equivalent of the Emmys. It's the third straight year Gervais claimed both prizes.

TRUMPING ALL RIVALS: An estimated 27.6 million people tuned in Thursday night to watch Bill Rancic become gainfully employed as Donald Trump's Apprentice, besting TV's most popular show, CBS' CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which drew 23.6 million viewers.

DON'T COUNT OUT KWAME: Meanwhile, Apprentice runner-up Kwame Jackson is doing okay. He's reportedly considering offers from KFC and billionaire tech mogul and Dallas Maverick owner Mark Cuban and, according to Star magazine, is planning to launch a film production company.

POSTPONING THE INEVITABLE: Courtney Love's misdemeanor trial on charges of disorderly conduct and being under the influence of a controlled substance has been postponed until May 3.

SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT: Meanwhile, the WB developing an original telefilm about Love's late hubby, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, based on the unauthorized book Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain. The movie's expected to premiere next season.

MAKING IT OFFICIAL: Beck reportedly marrying his pregnant girlfriend, Marissa Ribisi (twin sister of actor Giovanni), in a small ceremony April 4.

BEAT IT: Michael Jackson's rep denying a report that the popster planned to visit Namibia as part of a 12-day African cultural tour. She said Jackson cannot leave the U.S. because he surrendered his passport in his child-molestation case and a St. Louis travel agency was never authorized to book the trek on his behalf.

ON THE Q.T.: A judge has ruled that grand jury witnesses in the Michael Jackson child-molestation case can talk to the pop star's lawyers as long as the witnesses don't reveal any details of their grand jury testimony.

HELPING HAND: A number of Hollywood stars, including Renée Zellweger, Noah Wyle, Drew Barrymore, Michael Douglas and members of the Friends cast, have donated money to George Clooney's father, Nick's congressional campaign.

TRIAL FILE:A judge turning down Robert Blake's request to postpone a May 28 hearing into whether the actor's former attorney called a rival lawyer a "clown" during a deposition. Attorney Eric Dubin, who reps the family of Blake's slain wife in a civil suit against the actor, alleges that Blake's ex-lawyer Thomas Mesereau is guilty of "unprofessional conduct."

HEADING SOUTH: MTV announcing it will hold this year's Video Music Awards in Miami at the AmericanAirlines Arena on August 29. The music net says the move was made to avoid conflicting with the Republican convention, which is taking place in the VMAs usual homebase of New York.

SOLID CITIZENS: Emilio and Gloria Estefan tapped to receive the Spirit of Life Award from the Latin Entertainment Industry Group for City of Hope. The award, honoring both their charity work and their showbiz success, will be presented Nov. 18 in Miami.
