Fiddy Trips on Kanye's Success
The wind has obviously shifted since 50 Cent first headed West.
The Get Rich or Die Tryin' rapper announced Friday that he's going to quit tryin'—if Kanye West outsells him come Sept. 11.
Both platinum-selling artists have new solo albums dropping that day, and Fiddy is so sure of his ability to one-up his recent collaborator he told hip-hop site SOHH.com that he won't cut any more solo albums if West sells more records than he does that day.
"Put it like this," said Fiddy, whose real name is Curtis Jackson. "If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on Sept. 11, I'll no longer write music."
Or more specifically, "I'll write music and work with my other artists, but I won't put out any more solo albums."
"And I bet this—when Kanye West's sales come in, he's gonna have a 70percent decrease [the second week], 'cause Def Jam is gonna buy records to keep him closer to 50 Cent," he continued. "So, watch the first week, and then watch the second week. Watch his [expletive] drop off the planet. We keep our angles covered before we make a decent bet."
While 50 hasn't exactly been one for diplomacy in the past, his seeming beef with West appears to be largely motivated by creative differences and old-fashioned bravado, rather than any perceived slight on West's part.
The pair hit the studio together earlier this year, but nothing that they worked on will be included on Fiddy's upcoming disc, Curtis.
"We worked together on an actual record to try and create something," 50 said. "I went in with Kanye, I went in with Swizz Beatz, I went in with Will.I.Am, I went in with Polow [Da Don], just to see if they had something I didn't, to create a new direction for me that I couldn't get my hands on. I mean, these guys are popular producers [and] have a higher consistency than a guy that's unknown, but a lot of times they may have music planned that doesn't fit the project that you're working on."
Interestingly, Curtis and West's Graduation weren't even originally slated to drop on the same day. Fiddy's release date was postponed several times to allow for tweaks to the track list, and West's follow-up to Late Registration was actually moved up a week.
"They would like to see Kanye West give me a problem, because I've worked myself into a space where I've become the favorite," 50 said. "Everybody roots for the underdog when he goes against the favorite.
"I don't get trophies, I get checks," he added, referring to West, a six-time Grammy winner. "He gets the trophies. But how you gonna give him a trophy now when he comes out the same time I come out? And I'm just all over his [expletive]. You gonna clearly see the favoritism. He's gonna still get the trophies."
Meanwhile, West, told New York's Hot 97 FM last month that one of 50's new singles, "I Get Money," was his favorite song at the moment.
Whether West is still whistling the same tune remains to be seen, but apparently it's 50 who needs a little serenity now.
MTVNews.com reported that after learning Thursday that the Curtis tune "Follow My Lead" and its accompanying video were leaked online, Fiddy took his frustration out on his office at G-Unit Records in New York, ripping a plasma TV out of the wall, hurling his cell phone through a glass window and announcing he was taking a vacation.
And if Graduation bests Curtis next month, he'll get his wish.
