Farm Aid Gets Polka On

Farm Aid is ready to kick out the jams and, um, polkas.

With the annual daylong music fest turning 21, founders Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp unveiled an eclectic lineup for this year's show, ranging from the usual roots rock, folk and country, to reggae and, yes, even polka.

The festival, which raises money for ailing family farms, will take place Sept. 30 at the Tweeter Center in Camden, New Jersey.

Nelson, Young and Mellencamp--who hatched the hoedown in 1985 to provide support to farm families who were losing their land--are scheduled to grace the stage along with Dave Matthews, who was added to the Farm Aid board of directors in 2001.

Among the newly recruited acts on this year's slate: reggae stars Steel Pulse, polka king Jimmy Sturr and his orchestra, and New Jersey native and pedal-steel guitar virtuoso Robert Randolph & the Family Band.

There will also be a whole lotta shakin' goin' on. The bill includes rock 'n' roll icon Jerry Lee Lewis with Roy Head; Tex-Mex rockers Los Lonely Boys; southern jam band Gov't Mule; the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band; folk troubadour Arlo Guthrie; alt-country star Steve Earle, his wife, Allison Moorer, and her older sister, Shelby Lynne; and country newcomers Pauline Reese and Danielle Evin.

"Farm Aid is a movement inspired by artists who generously donate their time and talent to play on the Farm Aid stage," executive director Carolyn Mugar said in a release. "Once again, we are proud to welcome to the Farm Aid stage such a diverse and talented lineup."

Farm Aid 2006 is being underwritten by Silk Soymilk, Whole Foods Markets, Horizon Organic, American Apparel and Annie's Homegrown Naturals among other eco-friendly companies. Since its launch, Farm Aid has raised nearly $30 million to build and strengthen family farm food production.

Along with music, this year's event will also host a food drive and promote nearby family farms in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Tickets range from $65 to $85 for pavilion seats and $32 for lawn seats.
