Farewell, Captain Lou

It's not many people who can lay claim to the fan bases of Cyndi Lauper, Nintendo and the WWE. Captain Lou Albano was one of those people.

The 76-year-old Hall of Famer pro wrestler, who was a major catalyst in the sport's rise from punch line to punch line that also happens to be massively lucrative and popular, passed away this morning, once again proving it has not been the best year to be famous.

No cause of death was given, though the larger-than-life character had spent the past few days in hospice. Earlier this week, his family shot down claims that he was suffering from cancer.

Though Captain Lou spent four decades in and around the Spandex-friendly ring, he may be more recognizable to non-redneck factions of the population as Lauper's longtime father figure, having appeared in her music videos for "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "She Bop," "Time After Time" and "The Goonies R' Good Enough."

Still not ringing any bells? The noted rubber-band enthusiast was immortalized in the NRBQ song "Captain Lou" and appeared in several TV and film roles, among them Super Mario. Now that deserves respect.
