Ex-"SNL" Star's Death a Suicide
Former Saturday Night Live player Charles Rocket, who gained notoriety for once letting an F-bomb slip on live TV, committed suicide earlier this month, officials said Monday.
The actor and comedian, 56, was discovered Oct. 7 in a field near his home in Canterbury, Connecticut, with his throat slashed. On Monday, the Connecticut medical examiner's office announced its finding that the injury was self-inflicted.
"An investigation determined there was no criminal aspect to this case," State Police Sergeant J. Paul Vance said.
Rocket, whose real name was Charles Claverie, was a cast member on SNL during the low-rated 1980-81 season, following the departures of the show's remaining original players: John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Laraine Newman, Garrett Morris and Bill Murray.
Rocket was cast as a prominent Not Ready for Primetime Player and billed as a cross between Murray and Chevy Chase. During his year on SNL, he served as the mock anchor of "Weekend Update."
The expletive episode occurred during a skit spoofing Dallas' infamous "Who Shot J.R.?" plotline--a nationwide obsession at the time. Rocket took the stage in a wheelchair and dropped the F-bomb after being asked what it was like to have been shot.
The obscenity drew complaints from viewers and prompted NBC to issue an apology. Rocket and other cast members and writers on the show were later fired in an effort to revamp the show's humor.
Rocket went on to snag movie roles in films including Dumb and Dumber and Dances with Wolves. He also appeared in numerous television series, including Moonlighting, Max Headroom and Normal, Ohio.
Before he landed his SNL gig, Rocket was a newscaster at television stations in Colorado and Rhode Island.
The actor is survived by his wife, Beth, and son, Zane.
