Ex-Libertines Frontman Off the Hook
Troubled ex-Libertines frontman Pete Doherty has one less issue to worry about.
British prosecutors announced Tuesday that charges of robbery and blackmail against the rock 'n' roll bad boy were being dropped due to "insufficient evidence for a realistic chance of prosecution."
The charges stemmed from Doherty's Feb. 2 arrest after an alleged dispute at a London hotel with filmmaker Max Carlish, who had been making a documentary about Doherty's current band, Babyshambles.
The 25-year-old rocker spent four nights in prison before being released on bail.
After his release, he was required to observe a curfew forbidding him from going out between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
However, the curfew was relaxed for one night to permit him to perform with Babyshambles on Feb. 22. In keeping with his train-wreck image, Doherty proceeded to get into an onstage fight with his bass guitarist during the performance.
Doherty, who reportedly dates Kate Moss on an on-and-off basis, was kicked out of the Libertines in June 2004 after his addictions to crack and heroin became too much for his bandmates to handle.
"It was nasty," co-frontman Carl Barat told Rolling Stone in an interview. "It was very difficult. [We were] having security there to keep the drug parties out of the studio. There were too many drugs happening and violent tantrums. I just wish it wasn't like this."
In 2003, Doherty even broke into Barat's apartment and robbed him while in a drug-fueled haze. He eventually served two months in prison for the crime.
The band released their second album, The Libertines, in 2004. Their first album, Up the Bracket, was released in 2003 and turned them into virtual overnight sensations in their native U.K. Clash guitarist Mick Jones produced both albums.
For now, the future of the Libertines seems uncertain at best. Doherty continues to perform with Babyshambles, while Barat signed with Vertigo in February to embark on a solo career.
According to the band's official Website, Barat plans to form a new band that will include members of the Libertines; however, those plans are on hold while he completes his debut solo album.
