Everybody Loves Reruns, Reality
Couch potatoes are spending the final weeks of the season watching pretty much the same shows they've been tuning in to for months, with repeats of CBS' Everybody Loves Raymond and CSI topping the Nielsen charts, just ahead of Fox's surging American Idol.
Raymond attracted just under 13 million viewers and the regular Thursday showing of CSI notched another 12.7 million to finish first and second for last week.
But the big news continues to be American Idol, which keeps attracting more viewers as the talentfest winds down. Last Tuesday's sing-off drew a series-best 12.7 million viewers and Wednesday's ejection show was close behind with 12.1 million. Idol was also tops in the 18-49 demo that advertisers drool over and number one among the kiddie set, leading the list in the under-17 demo. Look for those Nielsens to increase, thanks to budding controversy over the voting process and an ever-narrowing contestant pool. The finale is set for September 4.
In general, reality shows continued to play well in the summer. Aside from Fox's Idol, NBC scored with episodes of Dog Eat Dog (number 8 with 11.4 million viewers) and Meet My Folks (16th with 9.8 million).
And plenty of people are still watching Big Brother. All three weekly broadcasts of CBS' social experiment/reality game landed in Nielsen's top 25: Wednesday's installment came in 14th with 10.6 million viewers, Thursday's was 19th with 9.7 million and Friday's was 25th with 8.5 million. The show also is a big draw online, with nearly 54,000 subscribers tuning in for the live feed at RealNetworks. That's up 60 percent from this time last year and already exceeding the 50,000 total subscribers for Big Brother 2.
All told, CBS had five of the top 10 shows among total viewers last week, with 60 Minutes, a Sunday installment of CSI and Becker all bringing eyeballs to the Eye network.
That helped power CBS to yet another weekly ratings crown, averaging 8.9 million viewers in prime-time. NBC (8.1 million) came in second, followed by Fox (6.4 million) and the still struggling ABC (5.7 million). UPN was first among the mini-nets, averaging 3 million, trailed by the WB (2.2 million) and Pax (1.2 million).
Here's a rundown of last week's 10 most watched shows, according to Nielsen Media Research:
