Eva Crowned Next Top Model
Self-proclaimed tomboy Eva Pigford out-fierced her competition to win the third installment of America's Next Top Model.
The 19-year-old student from Los Angeles was left the last pretty young thing standing on the season finale of Tyra Banks' catwalk-strutting reality show Tuesday night.
She triumphed over legally blind Amanda Swafford, who finished third after Banks chastised her for wearing her glasses during the judges' panel ("What designer would let you walk down the runway with your glasses? It's just not realistic."), and second-place finisher Yaya Da Costa Johnson, who was criticized for being "all strut."
Pigford was rewarded with a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl, a spread in Elle magazine and a contract with Ford Models.
"I am a cover girl," Pigford said after her win. "This little tomboy from L.A. that has never been beautiful. I was not the cute girl in school. I came here the shortest and the one that had the most insecurities inside of them, and now I'm America's Next Top Model.
"Watch out, world--here comes Eva!"
The newly-minted model joins the ranks of the show's previous winners: season two's Yoanna House, who scored representation with IMG Models, a spread in Jane magazine and a Sephora advertising campaign, and the first season's winner, Adrianne Curry, who landed a Revlon contract, representation with Wilhelmina Models and a Marie Claire spread.
Since her win, House has gone on to work such illustrious assignments as judging the Gillette Legs of a Goddess contest with Hilary and Haylie Duff, and appearing on the cover of Psychology Today magazine.
Meanwhile, Curry will be seen in the upcoming fourth season of The Surreal Life with faded stars such as pro wrestler Chyna, hip-hopster Da Brat and Christopher Knight, aka Peter Brady of The Brady Bunch. The Surreal Life 4 is set to premiere Jan. 9 on VH1.
Pigford wasn't the only big winner of the night--the Top Model finale won its time slot among the coveted 18-34 demographic and drew an audience of 6.5 million viewers to UPN, making it the show's most watched finale yet.
Perhaps the true winner of America's Next Top Model is its host. Since launching the model-making extravaganza, Banks has scored a syndicated talk show of her very own. The Tyra Banks Show is slated to debut in fall 2005.
Banks' Top Model gig is also secure for the foreseeable future--a fourth season of the fashionista fest is forthcoming in March 2005 and UPN is currently accepting applications for contestants for season five.
