Eurythmic Plans Interactive Rock TV
Stewart, who copilots the '80s Brit-pop duo with Annie Lennox, says he wants to create interactive TV channels based on classic rock acts like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Bob Marley.
Although Stewart was a little skimpy on the details, he told a group of British record industry professionals he wants to create about a dozen cable and online services each controlled by the individual artist.
"I'm saying, 'How would you like to create your own channel, create an archive for your own work?' " Stewart said at the new-media seminar.
He told Daily Variety that he had discussed the plan with Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Elton John, Bono, Lou Reed and Lennox, among others.
Stewart compared his new project to the early days of rock 'n' roll when musicians were often burned on the business end of deals because they didn't understand the ropes.
"It's up to the artists to take control of what's going on now," he said.
The still-untitled project will be launched through Stewart's Hospital, a private company he owns with Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen. The complex, located in the heart of London's Covent Garden, is scheduled to open in June 2002. Along with the necessary broadband TV studio, it will include post-production and recording facilities, a restaurant and a members-only club.
Stewart said the service would feature hundreds of digital channels, each devoted to archive footage of a different artist. He plans to charge about $120 a year for the service, which will be broadcast over the Internet to homes via digital TV companies.
Being a rock musician himself, Stewart is likely to get the support of the music industry's big names, which would give the project credibility.
This past summer marked Stewart's first foray into the television business when he launched the lifestyle channel Innergy.
