Esai Says Yes to Jericho, No to Ex's Claims

Esai Morales' week is looking up.

Just days after he was sued by an ex-girlfriend who accused him of assaulting her and giving her herpes comes word that the actor has landed a recurring role on CBS' Jericho.

Morales will play Colonel Hoffman, a career military officer and Iraq War veteran who has not seen his wife since the nuclear attacks that left the town of Jericho isolated from the outside world.

He is slated to appear in six of the resurrected drama's seven episodes when Jericho returns to the airwaves at midseason.

CBS initially canceled the post-apocalyptic series after its freshman season due to flagging ratings, but was later persuaded by fan outcry (and a whole lot of nuts) to give it a second chance.

With his professional life squared away, Morales can get back to sorting out his personal issues.

After his former live-in girlfriend Elizabeth Mazzocchi sued him last week, claiming he abused her and knowingly gave her an incurable STD, the NYPD Blue star responded on his MySpace page, calling the allegations "absolutely false and without merit."

Morales said he had been advised by his lawyer not to address Mazzocchi's specific claims, but entreated his fans to trust him.

"You know me. You’ve known me for nearly three decades. And you know in your hearts that these claims are baseless. This is not the way I live my life and I am incapable of committing these kinds of acts," he wrote.

"I am proud of my humanity, my activism and my respect for fellow human beings. I will continue to be optimistic and I will not let a personal attack deter me from the bigger picture."

He vowed to "vigorously defend myself and my reputation."

In response to Morales' MySpace posting, Mazzocchi's attorney, Gloria Allred said: "We are looking forward to having our day in court."
