"ER" Goodbye Draws Tears, Viewers
Despite teasing viewers with "Dr. Greene's last visit to County General," "Dr. Greene's final farewell to the hospital cafeteria" and "Dr. Greene's dramatic last trip to the grocery store"--before then giving him an unsatisfying off-screen death via fax--28.7 million viewers tuned in for last week's tearjerker episode, as Dr. Greene spent his final days in Hawaii before succumbing to cancer.
But the episode drew fewer viewers than previous ER sendoffs for original cast members Eriq LaSalle (28.9 million in December 2001), Julianna Margulies (32.7 million in May 2000) and George Clooney (35.7 million in February 1998).
Still, Edwards' exit pushed ER to the top of the ratings and gave NBC another victory for May sweeps, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Among total viewers, NBC (12.8 million) edged out second-place CBS (12.2 million) off the strength of a double dose of Friends and its usual batch of top-ten dramas, including Law & Order (19.8 million) and The West Wing (17.3 million). Meanwhile, one of NBC's many attempts at nostalgia during May sweeps, the L.A. Law reunion movie, pulled in 11.9 million viewers but couldn't top CBS' airing of the Ashley Judd theatrical Double Jeopardy.
For its part, CBS scored with a special spinoff episode of C.S.I. featuring David Caruso and the new cast of C.S.I.: Miami (27.1 million), not to mention Survivor: Marquesas (20.8 million) and Everybody Loves Raymond (19.5 million). The network's latest clip job, The Honeymooners 50th Anniversary, nabbed 12.7 million viewers Monday night, but settled for second place behind NBC's Crossing Jordan.
ABC averaged 9.3 million viewers for third place, with its best performance coming from the first installment of its CG-animated "megaseries" Dinotopia (17 million). Thanks to the show's success, ABC has already announced plans for a new Dinotopia series this fall, picking up where the movie left off.
Fox (7.8 million viewers) settled for fourth place, as its attempt at T&A deflated like a bad implant. The Girl Next Door: The Search for a Playboy Centerfold pulled in just 4.9 million viewers for fourth place.
Among the junior networks, the WB topped UPN among total viewers (4.5 million vs. 4.1 million).
