"ER" Gets Real with Liotta

ER's taking another surgical stab at real-time TV and this time they've got Ray Liotta on their side.

The Nov. 11 installment of NBC's medical drama will feature the GoodFellas star as an alcoholic ex-con who walks into the ER suffering from withdrawal and hallucinations, NBC announced Thursday. The entire episode will unfold in real time.

"He is a guy who, in some ways, has been very self-destructive in terms of criminal behavior and his health," executive producer David Zabel, who wrote the script, told Hollywood Reporter.

"He is completely estranged from his 22-year-old son, and he is an alcoholic who hasn't sought medical treatment for his illnesses, including cirrhosis of the liver. The episode is 44 continuous minutes of this man's treatment and his interactions with the staff in the ER and how those 44 minutes determine whether he's going to live or die."

The episode marks ER first truly experimental episode since 1997, when the cast and crew performed the fourth season premiere live for both the East and West coast. Ratings were good and glitches were minor, but critics panned the episode as boring.

Unlike that show, however, the Liotta installment will be taped and play out like an episode of 24.

The planned November sweeps stunt is the latest off-season tweak to the long-running series.

Earlier this year, producers confirmed that Alex Kingston's contract had not been extended, meaning her Dr. Corday will be ditching County General this season. Meanwhile, A Walk to Remember's Shane West and Twin Peaks' Madchen Amick were added to the cast.

As for Liotta, whose recent credits include last year's creepy thriller Identity and the indie cop drama Narc, it's going to be a busy few months. He's simultaneously juggling three upcoming movies, including The Last Shot due in September and, awaiting release, Control and Slow Burn.
