Emmy Honors Brady
Whose Emmy is it anyway?
According to last night's tally from the 30th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, the evening belonged to Wayne Brady, who not only emceed the CBS kudocast but also upset Dr. Phil to snag top talk show honors.
Not only did the improv funny guy, who shot to fame trading zingers on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, ace Oprah Winfrey's straight-shooting self-help guru protégé Dr. Phil McGray to win Best Talk Show Host his first time out, but The Wayne Brady Show improvised its way to a tie with The View for Best Talk Show.
Wayne's evening indeed. More like Wayne's world.
"The whole daytime thing, you know, is so new to me and I just figured, why me?" Brady told reporters backstage. "I had jokes ready to talk about Dr. Phil. I had things ready about The View."
Speaking of The View, cohost Barbara Walters revealed she was just as surprised by her's show's victory as Brady was, since it was the first Emmy out of six tries for ABC's coffee klatsch.
"When we didn't win Best Host...we said, 'We're not going to win,' " Walters said afterwards regarding the pact she made with gabby dames Joy Behar, Star Jones, and Meredith Vieira. "We said, 'As soon as we lose--we had our pocketbooks ready--we're going to go around the corner and get a martini.' "
Instead, they popped the cork on the champagne.
In the ongoing soap wars, ABC's classic daytime soap which gave the world Luke and Laura may be over the hill, but it shows absolutely no signs of age.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary season in style, General Hospital took home three trophies, including one apiece for suds stud Maurice Benard and costar Vanessa Marcil for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, and another for General Hospital's scribes in the category of Best Drama Series Writing.
Meanwhile, CBS' As the World Turns, which has been on the air an astounding 47 years, picked up the prize for Best Drama for the fourth time in its history, while cast member Benjamin Hendrickson earned Best Supporting Actor.
The Alphabet network's All My Children also nabbed its second Best Directing statuette.
In the always competitive game show category, Jeopardy! scored a daily double, coming up golden as Best Game Show and handing Alex Trebeck yet another Emmy for Best Game Show Host.
On the kids' side, Sesame Street stayed the course by collecting the Best Preschool Children's Series award for the 10th straight year, while Reading Rainbow was named Best Children's Series.
