Eminem Divorce a Done Deal
A judge in Michigan has officially granted Eminem's divorce, closing the book on the tumultuous on-again off-again marriage between the trash-talking rapper (otherwise known as Marshall Bruce Mathers III) and his lyrically scalded sweetie, Kim Mathers.
In addition to ponying up $1,000 a week in child support (or a lump sum of $52,000 a year), Macomb County Circuit Judge Donald G. Miller on Friday also ordered Em and his ex to share custody of their 5-year-old daughter.
Despite a stormy marriage--during which Mathers rhymed about murdering his other half in the song "Kim"--the divorce was actually settled amicably.
"It's always been Marshall's desire that whatever happened would happen in the best inerest of the child," Eminem attorney Harvey Hauer told the Detroit Free Press. "He holds his child's interest as paramount in all his decision making relative to the issues of this case."
In addition to hanging on to some family values, the 28-year-old Grammy-winner also is allowed to keep the couple's $450,000 house in suburban Detroit in exchange for writing Kim, 26, a check for $475,000 to buy a new home.
While the two sides struck a preliminary divorce deal in March, last week's agreement falls far short of the $2,740 a week in child support initially suggested by the Macomb County Friend of the Court.
But the judge's decree does take care of some loose ends, namely divvying up their "marital estate"--including mortgages, life insurance and other joint assets--and Eminem's income from sources such as album royalties, touring fees, merchandise and promotional appearances.
The couple, who met in love in high school, tied the knot in 1999. Em filed for divorce just 14 months later.
A two-month stab at reconciliation ended last March, with the missus filing for divorce a second time. The two were able to make nice long enough to hammer out a deal over the custody of their daughter.
An attorney for Kim Mathers declined to comment on the settlement.
