Elle's Racy Lingerie Ad Nixed
Not everyone wants to see Elle Macpherson's underwear.
An ad for the supermodel's lingerie line was banned in Britain after U.K. advertising regulators received complaints that the model pictured appeared to be touching herself a little too suggestively.
Apparently, while sex is roundly acknowledged to "sell," masturbation does not.
The ad ran in Vogue and showed a model clad in bra and panties, with her thumbs inserted into the panties' waistline.
The image of the scantily clad woman was framed as if photographed through a keyhole, and the model's head can't be seen in the shot.
Bendon UK defended its ad, saying it was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's film, Rear Window, and showed a moment that was "feminine, luxurious and styled."
Vogue, too, stuck up for the ad, calling it "beautiful with no disturbing undertones."
However, the Advertising Standards Authority wasn't budging from its position.
Bendon UK was ordered to consult with the agency before doing any more advertising.
