Ellen Turns 1,000, Gets Heck O a Surprise
She may have been celebrating an anniversary, but it was Christmas that came early for Ellen DeGeneres today.
The talk show host got a double-whammy surprise while celebrating the 1,000th episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, as Oprah Winfrey unexpectedly popped in, not only offering her congratulations but setting a date for the duo's much-hyped cover of O magazine.
"Cheers to you," Winfrey told her daytime cohort. "I really just wanted to say congratulations.
"I know what it takes to do 1,000 shows and I, like everybody else, wish for you 1,000 more," said Winfrey (who was accompanied by BFF Gayle King and on-the-mend pup Sadie). "You make our lives so much more fun and entertaining, and the grace with which you do it all is just really magnificent, so congratulations."
But happy thoughts weren't the only treat Winfrey had in store—she also let slip which all-important month would play host to the sisters-in-syndication's newsstand debut.
"I was just checking in with my O magazine co-cover girl," Winfrey said.
"I wanted to give you the big news today. I wanted to be there in person, but I've got my own thing going on here so I brought in Gayle King, who is the editor at large…We've been discussing when we're going to do the cover and we decided it's going to be on the…"
"December, holiday season," interjected King.
DeGeneres, who landed the cover spot after a Photoshop-powered campaign, promised the queen of talk that the issue would be the "biggest seller of all time."
"Now we have a theme, so tweet any new ideas you may have," Winfrey told her.
DeGeneres' milestone episode also happens to mark the 12th anniversary of her old sitcom's "Coming Out" episode, in which none other than Winfrey herself played the comic's shrink.
"Here we are 12 years later, still talking to each other, being in each others' lives, and now I'm going to be on the cover of your magazine with you," DeGeneres said. "How weird is that in life?"
"The fact that you said it was 12 years ago today, I thought, 'Yeah, we are getting older,' " Winfrey said. "That was so fun for me, too. You have just really handled it all so magnificently, I'm proud to be associated with you and proud to call me your girlfriend."
