Ellen Earns Daytime Emmy Cred
Daytime rookie Ellen DeGeneres has earned her stripes, which she proved Friday by snagging the Daytime Emmy for Best Talk Show.
A thrilled DeGeneres planted a smack on her mother Betty's cheek and thanked TV execs for convincing station managers nationwide that she was a hot commodity.
"I have fun every day," said DeGeneres, who previously won a Primetime Emmy for writing the coming-out episode of her sitcom Ellen. "It's the best job I ever had."
DeGeneres' crowd-pleasing show also took home three technical awards at the Daytime Emmy Awards.
Wayne Brady was honored as Best Talk Show Host for the second year in a row, despite the fact that he no longer has a show--it was canceled due to poor ratings.
Perhaps in a fit of sour grapes, Brady snubbed the event and was not present at Radio City Music Hall to receive his award.
Meanwhile, domestic diva Martha Stewart was slighted in the Best Service Show category--an award she's won four times over--in the same week it was announced that Martha Stewart Living would be suspended from the airwaves at the end of its 11th season in September. The convicted felon was in the audience for her defeat. (The show did win two trophies in the untelevised portion of the ceremony.)
Taking Stewart's place as service show queen was Suze Orman, who won the Daytime Emmy for her financial advice show, Suze Orman: The Lessons of Money, The Lessons of Life.
"For the first time in my life, I am seriously speechless," a shocked Orman gushed.
Anthony Geary of General Hospital won for Best Actor in a Daytime Drama, marking his fourth victory in the category.
"If I thought I had a shot at this, I would have had someone do my hair, " said a tussle-headed Geary, who claimed his fellow nominee and Hospital costar, Maurice Benard, "was robbed."
Michelle Stafford of The Young and the Restless nabbed the award for Best Actress in a Daytime Drama.
"I want to accept this in honor of all those kids who thought they were freaks in school and didn't fit in," said Stafford, who apparently knows where they're coming from.
The Young and the Restless captured the award for Best Daytime Drama for the sixth time, and nabbed four Daytime Emmys overall.
Bob Barker was honored as Best Game Show Host for the 13th time, and his hosting platform, The Price Is Right, won its fourth Daytime Emmy for Best Game Show since it debuted in 1972.
Al Roker, Meredith Vieira and Emeril Lagasse led a tone-deaf musical tribute to venerable children's program, Sesame Street.
The show, celebrating its 35th anniversary, is the most decorated program in Daytime Emmy history with 91 awards to its credit, having picked up another six at the Creative and Craft Awards presentation earlier in the week.
The Emmys are awarded by the National Television Academy and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
