It's happily ever after, after all for Elizabeth Smart!

The former Utah kidnap victim and ABC News contributor married her beau of one year, Matthew Gilmour, in an intimate ceremony Saturday on the island of Oahu.

The lovebirds took the plunge at the Laie Hawaii Temple of the Mormon church overlooking the Pacific Ocean in front of a small group of immediate family.

But why did Elizabeth choose this smaller impromptu ceremony rather than her originally planned big Summer date?

"Elizabeth's desire was for what most women want—to celebrate her nuptials in a private wedding with family and close friends," Smart's rep revealed to E! News. "After the story broke about her engagement and the media became increasingly invasive, Elizabeth recognized it was going to be impossible to have a traditional wedding devoid of distractions and unusual challenges outside of her control. She decided, about a week ago, the best way to avoid significant distraction was to change her wedding plans and to get married in an unscheduled ceremony outside of Utah."

Next up, the newlyweds are set to embark on their honeymoon at an undisclosed location, natch, before returning home to Utah.

Congrats!
