Eddie Murphy's Not So Spicy Engagement
A month ago, Eddie Murphy was not only single, but the father of five children.
Now, he's the father of six and headed for yet another trip down the aisle: The Shrek star popped the question to his girlfriend of 10 months, movie producer Tracey Edmonds, last week.
"Tracey and Eddie were engaged last Wednesday," Edmonds' personal assistant told E! News. "Tracey and Eddie are both very much in love and are excited about spending the rest of their lives together."
Murphy's rep, Arnold Robinson, simply issued the company line that he does not comment on the actor's personal life.
The impending nuptial news, first reported by OK! magazine, came just days after the couple appeared together at the Los Angeles premiere of Who's Your Caddy?, a comedy Edmonds produced. While walking the red carpet, the camera-ready twosome denied speculation, prompted by a massive canary diamond on Edmonds' ring finger, that they were already engaged.
"No, this isn't an engagement ring," Murphy said. "If I were gonna do an engagement ring, it would be much bigger."
Two days later, he did.
No wedding date has yet been revealed, though it will not be the first vow swap for either party. The 40-year-old Edmonds' divorce from Grammy-winning singer-producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, was finalized in June 2006. They were together for 13 years and have two children.
Murphy's romantic history is more tangled. The 46-year-old was previously married to Nicole Mitchell, with whom he has five children, and ended in divorce in April 2006. In the months that followed, Murphy began dating Spice Girl Melanie Brown.
By October, the relationship with Brown had ended, with Scary Spice pregnant, and he began dating Edmonds.
In appearing on a Dutch TV talk show the same month, Murphy publicly challenged whether he was father to Brown's baby, prompting threats of a lawsuit that culminated in last month's paternity test proving that Murphy was the father of the Angel Iris Murphy Brown. In a bit of karmic coincidence, the infant was born Apr. 3, sharing a birthday with her reluctant father.
Murphy has promised child support but Brown is still a woman scorned. She has continued to berate him via the media, telling various outlets that the pregnancy was not only planned, but that she and Murphy had designs on tying the knot shortly after their daughter's birth.
Turns out Murphy was ready to get married again after the birth. Just with someone else.
