Eddie Griffin's Smash Hit
It might not be the most cost-effective method, but Eddie Griffin has found a foolproof way of garnering publicity for his new movie.
While promoting his new racing flick at a California speedway Monday, the comedian crashed an ultra-rare and, as it turns out, ultra-expensive vehicle from his producer's private collection, destroying nearly $1.5 million worth of Italian metal.
Griffin was driving a red Ferrari Enzo, of which just 400 were produced, at the Irwindale Speedway in preparation for a Race for a Cause charity run sponsored by his new movie, Redline.
No doubt to the chagrin of Griffin, his pricey bang-up job was captured by local news cameras and occurred when the 38-year-old was unable to handle a tight, coned-off curve during a speedy practice run. Instead, the vehicle drove practically head-on into a concrete barrier on the side of the track. The car rose briefly into the air and Griffin immediately stopped his run.
The incident caused substantial damage to the front of the Ferrari, with the front left portion of the car completely smashed in. The vehicle was subsequently declared totaled.
Griffin was quickly checked out by paramedics at the scene and, according to his film's publicist, Wendy Zocks, was "doing okay."
"He walked away completely unscratched, but probably a little shaken," she said.
Though not too shaken to joke around.
"The brother's good at karate and all the rest of that, but the brother can't drive," Griffin said after the accident.
Likely in a less jocular mood was car enthusiast and Redline exec producer Daniel Sadek, who offered the use of his Ferrari Enzo to Griffin for the charity race and whose collection now consists of one less mint condition vehicle.
It's not the first write-off the movie has caused Sadek: He reportedly allowed another of his cars, a comparably much less valuable Porsche, to be destroyed during the making of the film.
"I'm glad Eddie came out of the crash okay, but my dream car got destroyed," he said. "I went to my trailer for about 15 minutes and I thought, 'There's people dying every day. A lot of worse things are happening in the world.'"
Like the death of Redline 2.
