Ed McMahon Settles Moldy Lawsuit

Can you put a price on man's best friend? Ed McMahon thinks so.

The erstwhile Tonight Show sidekick, whose pooch Muffin succumbed to toxic mold growing in his Beverly Hills mansion, settled his lawsuit last week against an insurance company and contractors who turned his home into a deadly "wasteland."

On Friday, the famous second banana scored at least $230,000 for the loss of his four-legged friend and damage to his multimillion-dollar home from one of the contractors, Controlled Environmental Solutions. That brings to a reported $7.2 million the total he's collected in the legal skirmish.

McMahon had sued for $20 million last April, accusing American Equity Insurance Co., two insurance adjustors and a host of contractors of botching a broken pipe repair job that spread the fungus from room to room (and from vent to vent).

The case was scheduled to go to court this week.

Last week's payoff resolves the entire dispute, as the other defendants had previously settled with McMahon--Johnny Carson's former whipping boy collected a little over one-third of his $20 mil asking price, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Calls to McMahon's attorney were not returned.

According to court documents, McMahon's killer-mold problems stem from July 2001, when that aforementioned pipe "exploded," flooding his den. Fungus soon followed, and handymen were called in to clean up the mess. A month after the initial mishap, contractors removed a ceiling tile in the den, allegedly spreading the pesky mold to the Jacuzzi in the master bedroom.

Now things get really gross. The lawsuit asserts that 79-year-old Ed and his wife of 10 years spend most of their time in the master bedroom--and as such became "seriously ill" from the toxins infesting their love nest. What's more, the couple's sheepdog, Muffin, developed respiratory problems and died.

Upon doctor's orders, McMahon and the missus left their sick house and retreated to a $23,000-a-month rental. Soon after, experts determined the bedroom contained high levels of "death mold."

In response, McMahon sued his insurance company for failing to test for mold levels, failing to properly investigate the McMahons' complaints, failing to reimburse them for their costs and even trying to remedy the problem by painting over the funky stuff.
