Ebert Selects Second Thumb

There'll be a new thumb joining Roger Ebert and the movies.

The portly pundit, who's been using a rotating roster of film critics since his longtime TV foil, Gene Siskel, died of a brain tumor last February, has found a permanent replacement.

Richard Roeper, a columnist who works alongside Ebert at the Chicago Sun-Times, will slide into the aisle seat to cohost the newly christened Ebert & Roeper and the Movies, syndicator Buena Vista Television confirmed Wednesday.

"He has strong opinions, a good movie background and a quick sense of humor," says Ebert of his new host.

Says Roeper: "I've always been a big fan of Roger and Gene and the show. It's like joining the Bulls after they've won all of those championships." Like his new partner, Roeper will continue writing his column, in addition to his TV tasks.

The decision to go with Roeper came after an exhausting 18-month national search, during which Ebert tried out a series of guest critics.

Although Roeper's professional thumb has yet to make or break a movie in true Siskel and Ebert fashion, he does have an encyclopedic knowledge of cinema and often writes about movies in his column. He's even authored a book on the subject: He Rents, She Rents: The Ultimate Film Guide to the Best Women's Films and Guy Movies.
