Ebert Moves On
In the meantime, longtime partner Roger Ebert has publicly expressed his grief, and carried on with Siskel and Ebert & the Movies.
Now, with season No. 24 about to start, the living half of the award-winning duo has come to one conclusion: The show must go on.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning Ebert is launching this season the nationally syndicated series under a new name--Roger Ebert & the Movies.
Those fearing a complete revamp of the thumbs up/thumbs down act needn't fret. The new show is built on the head-to-head format of its predecessor. Each week, two people will still go to a movie, come out and start comparing notes. But, as in the months since Siskel's death, Ebert will take on a revolving group of well-known guest critics.
Also securing its familiar spot on the program is the "Video Pick of the Week" section, featuring recently-released video titles.
The show will add a new twist, however, by occasionally breaking from the two-critic format. Ebert will periodically devote an entire show to a single topic, such as film genres, individual filmmakers, film festivals or the latest in movie trends.
Siskel and Ebert had been an on-air team since 1975, when a Windy City PBS producer decided to pit the film critic for the Chicago Tribune (Siskel) against the film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times (Ebert).
