Duran Duran's Epic Deal
After reuniting last year for a wildly successful tour, Duran Duran is back again and hungry for the next big thing--a new album.
The 1980s heartthrob band has signed with Epic Records to produce the first new record featuring all the original band members since 1983's Seven & The Ragged Tiger, Duran Duran's publicist confirmed to E!
The five founding members of the Brit pop band--Simon LeBon, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes, Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor--have been recording new material together since 2001, but only recently signed with their new label. They are reportedly near completion on the latest album.
"When we decided to reunite, the first thing we did was head to France to test our chemistry," LeBon says in a press release. "It became really clear that the magic was still there. Since then, playing together live has cemented it. We've discovered an incredible musical relationship."
Incredible indeed, considering that the band marked a hefty 25 years of Duran Duran music when it kicked off its North American tour last year.
But the aging pop icons proved they still had what it took. Enthusiastic fans of all ages poured into sold-out venues and chanted along to the bands' classic hits such as "Rio," "Girls on Film" and "Hungry Like the Wolf."
This spring, the band continued its momentum by returning to its home turf and performing 17 packed-to-capacity arena shows in Ireland and England.
Now Duran Duran is hard at work polishing the new album with veteran music producer Rich Harrison, who has helmed albums for the likes of Usher, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé; as well as with Don Gilmore, who has worked with acts such as Good Charlotte, Linkin Park and Pearl Jam.
LeBon--who with Rhodes were the only original members on the band's last studio album, 2000's critically panned Pop Trash--says that the band will not try to imitate the sound that catapulted it to fame. At the same time, he says, Duran Duran is trying to remain true to its roots so as not to alienate longtime fans.
The new album will include the song "Sunrise," a version of which appeared on the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy soundtrack. It will also feature the wistful "What Happens Tomorrow," the naughty "Bedroom Toys," and, perhaps in a message to those who missed the reunion announcement, "Still Breathing."
It will also include a bonus one-hour DVD featuring live performance footage shot over two nights at London's Wembley Arena this spring and exclusive behind-the-scenes shots.
The as-yet unnamed album is due on shelves this October.
