"Duets" Gets Lawless, Cheech, "Queer Eye"

For all those actors and athletes who rocked out in their bedrooms to Peter Frampton, lip-synched to Chaka Khan while holding a hairbrush like a microphone in front of the mirror or turned to Smokey Robinson's tunes to ease their broken hearts, this is a golden opportunity.

Yup, that Xena: Warrior Princess is a lucky gal.

Lucy Lawless and seven others were named Tuesday as contestants for the first season of Celebrity Duets on Fox, in which decidedly unmusical famous folk will team up with big-time recording artists each week to sing, well, duets.

Also in line to either be really embarrassed or to discover a previously untapped vein of talent are WWE World Champion Chris Jericho; 2004 Olympic Gold-winning gymnast Carly Patterson; Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's Carlton, Alfonso Ribeiro (hopefully he'll dance, too!); Queer Eye for the Straight Guy culture maven Jai Rodriguez; Queer as Folk actor and onetime host of E! Entertainment's Talk Soup Hal Sparks; Cheech Marin of Nash Bridges and multiple movies that prominently feature marijuana; and Lea Thompson of Caroline in the City and Back to the Future fame.

These eight entertainers will be paired off with a veritable who's-who of the last 30 years of pop, R&B and country music as they battle it out for a $100,000 cash prize earmarked for the winner's favorite charity.

Among others, Clint Black, Michael Bolton, Belinda Carlisle, Taylor Dayne, Peter Frampton, Macy Gray, James Ingram, Wynonna Judd, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Kenny Loggins, Richard Marx, Brian McKnight, Aaron Neville, Smokey Robinson, Randy Travis, Dionne Warwick and Lee Ann Womack will be on hand to help their high-profile protégés strike the correct notes.

Celebrity Duets is the latest unscripted spawn to swim out of the mind of executive producer Simon Cowell, who also sold the concept to the United Kingdom's ITV last year under the name Star Duets.

The series kicks off with a two-hour premiere Tuesday, Aug. 29, before switching to its regular Thursday slot on Sept. 7 (and clearing the way for Dancing with the Stars, which premieres Sept. 12). A results show in which the celeb with the lowest amount of audience votes gets booted off will air on Fridays.

Emmy winner Wayne Brady will serve as host/ringmaster.
