Drew's Family Reunion
The recently married 26-year-old actress, who not-so-coincidentally is making the rounds promoting her new movie, says she reconciled with her mother, Jaid, last year after more than a decade of bad blood.
As a matter of fact, Barrymore says she got the urge to reconcile directly because of her new flick, in which she plays an aspiring writer who at the age of 15 has a child and winds up in a failed marriage with the drug-addicted father.
"There's a scene where my water breaks, and I yell out, 'Mom!' and it was sort of like me calling out to her," Barrymore says in the November issue of Rosie. "It was very cathartic."
The two decided to meet and work on mother-daughter d้tente. Escorted by hubby Tom Green, Barrymore agreed to finally break the ice.
"Eventually we got to where we could hang out on our own, but there were a lot of real crazy emotions flying all over the place," says Barrymore. "The one thing my mom said to break the ice was that we [had] really needed to separate to become our own people before we could come together again. I respect that."
Not so long ago the elder Barrymore was an embarrassment to Drew, parlaying the legendary family name into a spread for Playboy and trying unsuccessfully to auction off her daughter's baby clothes and other mementos over the Internet. Jaid was also busted last year in New York for illegal possession of a weapon while she was putting up promo posters for a rock band.
Jaid was a prototypical stage mom who helped Drew land her star-making role in E.T.. Drew cut ties with her in 1992 and again in 1995 after a brief reconciliation. Jaid was apparently ready for a reunion, having dedicated her book, Secrets of World Class Lovers: Erotic Tips & Sensual Stories for a Lifetime of Sexual Fulfillment, to her famous daughter.
While both mother and daughter have had their ups and downs, Drew's relationship with her father, John Barrymore Jr., is said to be cool. Her parents got divorced before she was born.
Drew's own demons affected her relationship with her parents. As a teen, the former child star became addicted to drugs and alcohol and underwent two stints in rehab. She has been sober for several years.
The making-up with mom comes as Drew finally walked the aisle. After months of goofing on the public about whether or not they were married, Barrymore and Green tied the knot in July. And Jaid Barrymore was not only in attendance, she gave away the bride.
