Drew Carey's Pipes Cleaned

Drew Carey: Unplugged.

No, not a new TV special, but the story of the funnyman's not-so-funny weekend.

According to his publicist, the star of ABC's The Drew Carey Show and Whose Line Is It Anyway? checked into an undisclosed Los Angeles-area hospital last Friday after complaining of chest pains while taping his sitcom.

The doctors pinpointed the cause of the pain--a blocked coronary artery--and Carey had to undergo emergency angioplasty.

The procedure is fairly routine and went off without a hitch. Surgeons inserted a balloon catheter through Carey's blocked artery and then inflated it to remove any obstruction. Once clear, surgeons then implanted a tiny mesh tube (called a stent ) in the artery to prop it open and keep the heart pumping smoothly. (It's the same procedure Vice President Dick Cheney underwent in March.)

"It was very successful and he's feeling fine," Carey's publicist, Christina Papadopoulos, tells the Associated Press. "He was joking and his usual jovial self."

"All of us at ABC are thrilled his procedure was a success," adds network spokesman Kevin Brockman.

Carey, who regulary pokes fun at his rotund figure, affinity for beer and less-than-nutritious diet, was released from the hospital on Monday.

Now that he's gotten his pipes cleaned, doctors expect the big man to be back on set sometime next week.

Of course, Carey has a big-time incentive to flex his work muscles. ABC is paying him between $600,000 to $750,000 an episode to star for two more seasons on his namesake sitcom.
