Drama Desk Digs "Spamalot," "Doubt"

Spamalot continues to win a lot this award season.

The musical, loosely based on the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, scored big at Sunday's Drama Desk Awards, taking home three trophies, including Best Musical.

With a leading four Outer Critics Circle Awards and 14 Tony nominations under its belt, as well as months of sold-out performances, the Mike Nichols-helmed production starring Hank Azaria, David Hyde Pierce and Tim Curry is the toast of Broadway.

On the dramatic side, there was no doubt about it: Doubt dominated. John Patrick Shanley's play about a nun's suspicions of a priest's inappropriate behavior at a Catholic school in the Bronx, which has already earned the Pulitzer Prize and tied Spamalot with four Outer Critics Circle Awards, was named Best Play and took home a total of five Drama Desk Awards. Stars Cherry Jones, who plays the nun, Brian F. O'Bryne, who portrays the priest, and Adriane Lenox, who plays the mother of a young student, received acting nods, while Doug Hughes was named Best Director.

Tying Doubt for the most Drama Desks was the musical The Light in the Piazza. Victoria Clark took home Best Actress for her portrayal of an unhappy Southern matron on an Italian vacation. Piazza also won awards for music, sets, lighting and orchestrations.

Other winners included Twelve Angry Men and La Cage aux Folles , which won in the play and musical revival categories, respectively. Billy Crystal picked up an award for Solo Performance for his autobiographical 700 Sundays.

The Drama Desk is an organization of theater journalists and critics that honors both Broadway and off-Broadway productions.

Next up on the theater circuit is the Tonys, which will take place at Radio City Music Hall on June 5 and be broadcast on CBS with Tony winner Hugh Jackman returning as host.
