Dr. Phil Keeping to the Couch

The doctor is in--for at least three more seasons, anyway.

Phil McGraw, TV's favorite advice-spewing shrink, has signed a new deal that will keep him on the Dr. Phil couch through the 2008-09 season, show syndicator King World announced Monday.

"We're thrilled Dr. Phil has decided to continue his groundbreaking show for another three years," says King World CEO Roger King in a statement. "Dr. Phil is immensely popular, and its momentum hasn't slowed."

"We have more to do and much to say over the next five years," says McGraw. "Our show continues to be a labor of love. Our production teams are second to none and consistently deliver a program that informs, entertains and facilitates positive change. We have an enduring relationship with millions of devoted viewers who have taken us into their hearts and homes."

The brash McGraw debuted in 2002. He reupped his original two-year deal for an additional two years that carried his syndicated daytime gabfest through the 2005-06 season.

The latest agreement ensures the best-selling author will, for the foreseeable future, continue to dispense his brand of tough-love advice on everything from compulsive eating, child adoption and coming out of the closet to psychic addiction, evil stage parents and the real lives of desperate housewives.

No word how much the new deal is worth. Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions, which created the show, distributor King World Productions and producer Paramount Television declined to comment.

Winfrey's own show served as the launching pad for McGraw, who got his break dishing his "tell-it-like-it-is" strategies for self-improvement and good health as a frequent guest. He also writes a monthly column for her O magazine. In fact, Dr. Phil scored the highest ratings for any rookie syndicated series since the debut of The Oprah Winfrey Show way back in 1986.

McGraw's televised therapy sessions can now be seen in almost every part of the country via 207 stations. His first prime-time special, CBS' two-hour A Dr. Phil Primetime Special: Family First, racked up impressive Nielsens in September, as 13 million tuned in.

McGraw has yet to outdraw Oprah in the ratings, and he will need to stick around for a bit longer if he plans on passing her. Winfrey herself recently signed a contract extension that will keep her on the air through the 2010-11 season.
