"Dr. Phil" in for Five

Dr. Phil will be practicing well into the next decade.

Dr. Phil McGraw, the best-selling author whose brand of tough-love advice has made him the most popular daytime gabber on the tube with the exception of his mentor, Oprah Winfrey, has reupped for another five years, show syndicator, King World announced Tuesday.

The new deal calls for the brash McGraw to remain on the Dr. Phil couch through the 2013-2014 television season--quite an accomplishment for a guy who just three years ago was a talk show neophyte.

McGraw got his start dispensing his "tell-it-like-it-is" strategies for self-improvement and good health as a frequent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show before getting his own show in September 2002.

"Dr. Phil has become an American icon in record time and his series' ratings just keep getting stronger and stronger," said King World CEO Roger King in a statement. "Dr. Phil's popularity is still growing, and we're thrilled to know we'll be bringing stations this top-quality series well into the next decade."

Now in its third season in syndication, Dr. Phil has made big inroads with the ladies since its debut, increasing viewership by 29 percent among women 18 to 34, by 15 percent in women 18 to 49, and 13 percent in women 25 to 54.

The chatfest also consistently ranks among the top ten of all syndicated strips, coming in second only to The Oprah Winfrey Show in the ratings. It can be seen on 210 television stations covering more than 99 percent of the country.

Perhaps the show's success has something to do with the bald-pated Texas shrink's penchant for dishing enlightening, no-nonsense advice on topics ranging from eating disorders, teen pregnancies, standing up to your spouse and lovers' quarrels to the do's-and-don'ts of breast-feeding in public, sex addiction, compulsive tendencies and the real lives of desperate housewives.

"It is an honor to be invited to millions of viewers' homes in the U.S. and around the world," McGraw stated. "It is a privilege and not something I take lightly. Our show continues to be driven by viewers and what they consider relevant. I am excited to have this continued opportunity for so many years to come."

King World already renewed its prescription once with the tough-talking psychologist last November when it signed him to a contract extension that carried his therapy sessions through the 2008-2009 season.

As was the case with the previous agreement, Winfrey's Harpo Productions, which created the show, King World and producer Paramount Television declined to comment on how much the current contract is worth.

McGraw also writes a monthly column for Winfrey's O magazine and is the author of five New York Times bestsellers, including Life Strategies: Doing What Works, Doing What Matters and several cookbooks.

He's also been dabbling in the practice of keeping later hours. McGraw's first prime-time special, CBS' two-hour A Dr. Phil Primetime Special: Family First, scored solid Nielsens last September when it attracted 13 million viewers.
