Douglas Fan Dawnette Found Sane
Sanity comes at a price, apparently.
Catherine Zeta-Jones' alleged stalker has been found competent to stand trial by a court-appointed psychiatrist, her attorney said Monday.
There was some question as to whether the case would continue against the accused, Dawnette Knight, after her lawyer, Richard Herman, questioned his own client's ability to understand the legal proceedings against her.
Last month, following an apparent suicide attempt by Knight, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg hesitantly agreed with Herman. Schnegg ordered the temporary halt of Knight's preliminary hearing pending the outcome of a mental evaluation.
Now, the Michael Douglas-obsessed woman accused of making death threats against Zeta-Jones, must be back in court on Sept. 9 for the resumption of the prelim, which will ultimately determine if there's enough evidence for a criminal trial against her. If the judge finds the evidence against Knight warrants a trial on 24 separate stalking-related counts and Knight is convicted, the 33-year-old woman would face years in prison.
The written report by Dr. Kal Sharma has not yet been released, but Herman says the shrink has found Zeta-Jones nemesis Knight sane and competent despite erratic behavior in the courtroom and the supposed jailhouse suicide attempt three weeks ago.
Herman has continuously asserted that his client is "normal." Last week he said he was certain the psychiatrist would find his client competent enough to return to legal proceedings. "I think before she was going through a lot and she was upset," Herman said. "I think she [Knight] has calmed down now."
Zeta-Jones has been anything but calm after receiving dozens of letters in which Knight allegedly threatened to carve up the Chicago star.
The Oscar winner took the stand last month to give chilling testimony against Knight. "This has affected me and it will affect me the rest of my life," Zeta-Jones pleaded on the witness stand, voice quivering. "I feared for my safety the moment I was alerted to the fact I was receiving death threats," she said. Douglas, for his part, testified that he was "shocked, scared and stunned" when he learned of the repeated phone calls, letters and death threats made against his wife.
The following day, Herman said Knight tried to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills.
Neither Knight nor Zeta-Jones has had any official comment since the prelim was halted.
However, Knight has frequently asserted her innocence and her legal rep has been on a rampage against the Hollywood power couple. At one point, Herman blamed Zeta-Jones for his client's barbituate binge--suggesting Knight's' suicide attempt was a direct result of Zeta-Jones and Douglas' testimony and subsequent comments the couple made to the media.
Knight remains jailed and is due back in Los Angeles' Mental Health Courthouse Sept. 8, one day before she is scheduled to appear in downtown Los Angeles Superior Court for the remainder of her preliminary hearing.
