Doherty: Tour, No; Rehab, Yes

For Pete Doherty to stay on the road to recovery he's decided to keep his band off the road.

The Babyshambles singer and off-on beau of supermodel Kate Moss has nixed the remainder of his band's 13-date U.K. tour to give himself more time to recover after leaving a London drug rehabilitation facility.

The band's label, EMI, announced Saturday that the British rockers had canceled a Friday's show in Liverpool and postponed upcoming gigs set for Glasgow, Nottingham, Manchester and Newcastle.

In the interim, band members expressed hope that and exhausted Doherty continues to make "excellent" strides in treating an addiction that led to a litany of drug possession charges earlier this year.

"It is now clear that Peter embarked on this arduous and high profile tour too soon after his discharge," the label spokesman said in a statement. "The band apologizes to fans but hopes that they will understand the importance of Peter being able to best continue his good progress in recovering from addiction."

No word yet when the shows will be made up.

Last month, a judge at London's Thames Magistrate Court, impressed by the progress Doherty showed, ordered the 27-year-old musician to extend his stint in treatment in lieu of jail on a litany of drug charges.

The ex-Libertines frontman got into his current mess in April when he was arrested just three hours after attending a court hearing for another drug incident, for which he received two years of community service. Police found small amounts of heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana in his vehicle.

The hits kept coming. Doherty was busted again on Aug. 7 for possession of a crack pipe and a small amount of crack at his east London home and pleaded guilty to all five charges on Aug. 18.

However, instead of locking Doherty up at a September hearing, District Judge Jane McIvor delayed sentencing until Dec. 4 to give the troubled troubadour and self-confessed drug addict additional time to clean up and pass a series of drug tests. And apparently figuring a little encouragement couldn't hurt, the judge also praised Doherty for his ditty "The Blinding," calling it a "good tune."

Speaking of positive reviews, British critics have been atwitter over the newly reformed rocker's post-rehab performances. London's Independent hailed Doherty's unique ability to combine the "squalid ruin" evoked by his drug headlines with the "glamour and romanticism" of a debauched poet--a Byronic "beautiful mess."

Doherty also seems to be back in Moss' good graces. The two split up following after Moss was photographed snorting what appeared to be cocaine during a late-night recording session with Doherty.

The catwalker turned up at a nightclub near Dublin last week and joined Doherty and his mates onstage to sing "La Belle and La Bete."

Britain's oft-dubious Daily Star even quoted an uncle of Doherty's as saying that now that he's off drugs, the couple plan to tie the knot on Moss' 33rd birthday on Jan. 16 in Ibiza. Reps for the two have not confirmed the nuptial news.

As for fans who can't wait for the rescheduled dates, a documentary on Doherty and his recent travails is scheduled to air on the BBC's Electric Proms later this year.
