Doherty Fined for Getting His Kicks

Pete Doherty may be on the road to kicking his bad habits, but he's been ordered to pay for kicking something a little less laudatory: a reporter.

The arrest-prone Babyshambles frontman was fined $1,400 by a London court Wednesday after copping to assaulting a BBC reporter outside the same courthouse earlier this year.

Doherty pleaded guilty to kicking BBC Radio 1 reporter Trudi Barber outside Thames Magistrates' Court on March 23. The incident stemmed from an impromptu judo-inspired display from the rocker, which took place after he pleaded guilty to seven counts of drug possession.

Surrounded by a throng of reporters on his way out of the building, Doherty lashed out at the press, kicking a microphone out of Barber's hand and inadvertently making contact with her in the process.

Doherty's attorney, Sean Curran—hyperbole aside, a likely contender for the title of hardest working man in showbiz—told reporters that Kate Moss' on-again rocker beau, who originally pleaded not guilty to the assault charge, changed his plea to guilty earlier today after reviewing TV footage of his well-documented outburst.

The Down in Albion rocker was good enough to take responsibility for the incident, which left Barber with hand and shoulder pain, telling the judge, "If I hurt this lady, I'm sorry." Still, his benevolence didn't last long, as he quickly referred to the journo as a member of the "harassing scum of the press."

While Barber was likely less than thrilled by her characterization, the judge was equally unamused.

"People in public life have a responsibility to behave and be a good role model to others," Judge Helen Skinner said during sentencing, presumably with a straight face. "Referring to the press as scum does no one any favors.

"You were obviously courting publicity, judging by your somewhat extravagant behavior outside the court."

In addition to his kicking fit, the suddenly press-shy Doherty also climbed the wall of a surrounding building, presumably to escape the 50-plus reporters hovering at the scene. It was from his perch that he connected with Barber.

Since then, the rocker has worked hard to clean up his act and was released from a brief stint in London's infamous rehab clinic, the Priory, last month. He's rekindled his relationship with supermodel Moss, regularly shown up for his band's gigs—an unlikely proposition just a few months ago—and already has a new business venture in the works, to design a line of clothes for indie label Gio-Goi's spring-summer 2007 collection.

In between court dates, Doherty has also managed to find time to get back to the business of rocking out.

Babyshambles is set to release their five-song Capitol Records debut, The Blinding, Dec. 5. Apparently adhering to the maxim of writing what they know, bassist Drew McConnell told British music mag NME that the title track is "about the vacuous nature of tabloid newspaper attention. No matter how intelligent and strong you think you are, it still affects you."

But before Doherty & Co. can promote their new album, the rocker has to face another kind of music: In addition to the $1,400 fine for his assault charge, Doherty was ordered to pony up $475 in compensation to Barber, who lost sleep due to the pain, and $380 in court costs.

Decked out in his trademark trilby, the British rocker told the court that he was unable to pay the fee today as all he had on him was "27 pence," or roughly 51 cents.

Such is the life of a rock star.

Doherty has been ordered to make good on his fines within the next seven days.
