Doherty Continues Clean-Up, Avoids Jail

Pete Doherty's got fans in high places.

After praising his songwriting prowess, a London judge on Monday ordered the Babyshambles singer to spend additional time at a drug rehabilitation facility in lieu of jail for a litany of drug-possession charges.

Doherty apparently made a good impression on District Judge Jane McIvor. In assessing his progress, she told the 27-year-old rocker and sometime Kate Moss sidekick he could avoid the lockup if he stayed clean and employed.

"At this stage it would be counterproductive to simply take you away from society for a matter of weeks and would undo the hard work that a lot of professionals have put in," McIvor said, per London's Daily Mail.

Doherty, who appeared at the Thames Magistrates Court in a black suit, white shirt and striped tie, reportedly stood expressionless before the judge and refused to speak to the news media as he was escorted out by security.

The rocker's current court docket stems from an April arrest in London--just three hours after attending a hearing for another drug incident, for which Doherty received two years of community service. Police found small amounts of heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana in his vehicle.

Doherty was arrested again on Aug. 7, this time for possession of a crack pipe and a small amount of crack at his east London residence. He pleaded guilty to all five charges on Aug. 18 and was due to receive his punishment on Sept. 4.

McIvor noted that the troubled troubadour and self-confessed drug addict had tested negative for heroin and cocaine on two separate occasions during the past two months, and she opted to postpone sentencing until Dec. 4.

And apparently figuring positive reinforcement was the way to go, the judge also offered praise for his ditty "The Blinding," calling it a "good tune."

Doherty is hoping his current stint in rehab goes better than previous attempts. In July, the ex-Libertines frontman nixed a concert to enter a treatment center, but his sobriety didn't take.

While Doherty tries to pull himself out of his rut, his apparently on-again companion Moss seems more popular than ever--despite last year's scandal, in which she was photographed doing drugs during a Doherty recording session.

After bouncing back with new modeling gigs, the 32-year-old catwalker recently tried her hand at acting, starring in four short erotic films helmed by Leaving Las Vegas director Mike Figgis for lingerie house Agent Provocateur.

The first of the racy four-minute flicks, which features Moss daydreaming while wearing the company's sexy underwear, premiered Monday on Agent Provocateur's Website. It proved such a hit among Netizens that it crashed the site's server.

A new film will unspool every two months, with the second debuting Nov. 1. The third reel, in which Moss appears nude, arrives Jan. 10, and the fourth will be released Mar. 1, 2007.
