Doherty Arrested in Record Time
Pete Doherty: You've just been praised for your progress in sticking to a rehab program and improbably scraped through yet another court hearing without landing jail time. What are you gonna do next?
Er, get re-arrested for drug possession?
The Babyshambles rocker brought irony to brave new heights Thursday, when just three hours after receiving a slap on the wrist for seven counts of drug -possession, he was arrested on a whole new batch of drug offenses.
The perpetual troublemaker was busted in east London at approximately 2:10 pm on suspicion of possessing class A drugs with intent to supply after a Metropolitan police officer stopped his car. It's unknown why the vehicle was originally pulled over, though Doherty was not driving at the time.
"A 27-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were arrested after a vehicle was stopped...by plain-clothed officers who were carrying out a patrol in an unmarked police car," Scotland Yard said in a statement. "They were arrested on suspicion of possessing what was believed to be class A drugs with the intent to supply."
While it's also unknown what drugs exactly Doherty, 27, was believed to be in possession of, his previous class A violations run the gamut from heroin to crack cocaine to morphine to marijuana.
Doherty and the unnamed driver were both held overnight and released early Friday morning after posting bail.
"Potty Pete," as the he's been dubbed by the British media, was escorted out by his attorney, Sean Curran.
"I feel like smacking you in the face, mate, stay away from me," he told reporters on the way out.
Curran noted that while police arrested Doherty for suspicion of possession as well as intent to supply, he was only held on the former charge.
"He has been bailed pending further inquiries to a date in June," Curran said.
The 21-year-old driver, meanwhile, returns to court in May.
The latest arrest may--finally--spell bad news for Doherty, who up until now has racked up an impressively destructive litany of drugs-related charges with nary a serious consequence.
At yesterday's hearing, he was praised by Judge Jane McIvor for his positive progress in sticking to a rehab program, saying he was "showing significant signs of compliance and effort."
After pleading guilty to seven charges of drug-possession stemming from two arrests over the winter and missing his initial sentencing hearing due to a Paris gig, the rocker was let off, by any account, quite easily.
He was sentenced to two years' probation, 18 months in rehab, banned from driving for the next six months and fined 50 pounds in court fees.
As always, McIvor warned him that if he breached any part of the order, he could face serious jail time. Though it hasn't happened yet.
Doherty is due back in court on a progress report?though it seems clear how that may go--May 31.
His next monthly drug test, instituted as a result of separate drug possession charges, has been postponed until May 12.
