Dog's Bounty Cleared With a Bullet, but Dog Still on the Hook

Dog the Bounty Hunter's brush with death wasn't quite the close call the reality star made it out to be. In fact, in the eyes of the law, it was nonexistent.
El Paso County Assistant District Attorney Dan Zook today dropped attempted murder charges against the man accused of shooting at mulleted mercenary Duane Chapman and bail bondsman Bobby Brown (not that one) in Colorado last month. Zook cited a lack of cooperation and a lack of evidence for his decision.
As a result, not only will Hoang Nguyen not face any new charges, he has been advised by his public defender to file suit against Chapman & Co.
And that's not all.
"I plan to file a motion to compel prosecution against the parties for false reporting," Deputy Public Defender Bill Schoewe said. "I've also advised my client to seek a civil attorney to bring a civil lawsuit against [Chapman and Brown]."
The incident allegedly took place on April 21, when Dog and his dawg claimed Nguyen, wanted after skipping out on a domestic violence case, shot at them. The confrontation was supposedly caught on camera for Chapman's A&E reality show, Dog the Bounty Hunter.
However, Zook says there were conflicting witness statements from Dog, son Leland Chapman and Brown. If that wasn't bad enough, producers refused to hand over footage of the alleged shooting incident . And, oh yeah, there was no evidence the weapon even existed.
No one was hit by a bullet, no shell casings were found, and Nguyen did not have a gun on him when he was caught several hours later by Chapman and Brown. Producers said the reason they didn't hand over their tapes was because their crack crew failed to capture on video any trace of the shooting (and what would no doubt have been played up by the network's promo department).
For his part, Dog has so far opted not to comment on his potential charges but did say that he was satisfied with the outcome of Nguyen's case.
"It's my job to find 'em and fix 'em—not put more charges on a fugitive," he said in a statement. "That's not my style. Nguyen apologized to me when I captured him, and I'm cool with that."
