DMX Case Pushed Back
The wheels of justice have slowed to a crawl for DMX.
After missing his day in court last month due to illness, the rapper showed up on Tuesday only to have his case adjourned until Oct. 25.
DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, held his tongue as Judge Dorothy Chin-Brandt granted a defense request to postpone the case yet again.
The rapper-actor is accused of violating the terms of his release following his bizarro car crash at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport in June 2004, when he slammed his vehicle into a gate after telling a parking attendant that he was a federal agent.
DMX pleaded guilty to being under the influence of Valium at the time of the incident and was sentenced to a conditional discharge, meaning that he had to stay out of trouble or risk jail time. However, since that time, he has been involved in two car accidents.
Shortly after entering his guilty plea, DMX was collared for driving 104 mph near his Mount Kisco, New York, home and charged with speeding, driving an unregistered vehicle and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation.
In April, the rapper was arrested again for driving with a suspended license after he crashed his SUV into another vehicle driven by a woman, who subsequently rammed an unmarked police car carrying two officers. Luckily, no one was seriously injured in the crash, including DMX's pregnant wife and two children, who were with him at the time.
Clad in a cream-colored sweat suit, an animated DMX told reporters outside the courthouse Tuesday that the charges against him were "all ludicrous."
He danced down the steps of the Queens Criminal Court building and fidgeted from foot to foot before reporters, cracking gum as he answered questions.
"It's been very stressful," he said. "Nobody likes to come to court."
While he doesn't mention being arrested in his lyrics, DMX said the topic "puts me in a frame of mind, it evokes certain emotions that help me create."
By now, those emotions must be pretty familiar, judging from the entertainer's lengthy rap sheet.
In 1999, DMX was busted in his native Yonkers for allegedly roughing up a passing motorist who he claimed attacked his missus.
In 2001, the rapper was slapped with a string of charges in upstate New York in connection with a minor traffic violation. After pleading guilty to a misdemeanor account of reckless assault, he spent 15 days in jail and paid a $1,000 fine.
The next year also proved to be just as busy for DMX's lawyers. The embattled rap star struck a deal with prosecutors in New Jersey, agreeing to plead guilty to 13 counts of animal cruelty, disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia and a fine of $15,000 in return for making a series of public service announcements. Then on Christmas 2002, DMX was busted for failing to signal a lane change and offering cops a phony ID.
And in 2003, DMX was arrested for swearing during a concert in the Caribbean island of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The Cradle 2 the Grave star's attorney, Murray Richman, is reportedly trying to hammer out a deal in the current case with Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. Stay tuned for the latest developments in the legal sagas of DMX.
