DMB Driver in the Dumps

The s--t storm over a Dave Matthews Band-fueled s--t storm intensified today as the group's tour bus driver, Stefan Wohl, was criminally charged with dumping human waste into the Chicago River last summer.

The Aug. 8 incident, in which the driver allegedly discharged nearly 800 pounds (or 100 gallons) of poop into the drink as the bus crossed a Chi-Town bridge, sparked outrage among city officials and residents.

Unfortunately for all involved, under the bridge at exactly the time of said dumpage was Chicago's Little Lady tour boat, with more than 100 people on board taking in the sights of the Second City.

Waste from a tour bus was apparently not on the itinerary.

Wohl was officially rung up Wednesday with misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct and discharging contaminates to cause water pollution.

"We were satisfied with what they told us that it could not have been an accident," Cook County prosecutor Robert Egan said of the charges, which could land the 42-year-old Wohl in jail for a year in addition to a $10,000 fine.

Wohl, a Texas native, turned himself into Chicago's finest Wednesday, was processed and released.

In addition to the criminal charges, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed a lawsuit in August seeking $70,000 in damages against the band and the driver, alleging they violated state environmental laws.

At least one passenger still smarting from the feces fallout has filed suit against Matthews. The Chicago Architectural Foundation, which runs the river tour, told the Associated Press that the group has received several angry calls from passengers demanding compensation for clothing and personal items.

Matthews himself has been mostly mum on the embarrassing allegations, although his eponymous band did post a statement on its Website back in October saying, "We still do not have a definitive understanding of what happened."

Matthews and mates promised to "make things right for all concerned" and make separate $50,000 donations to the Chicago Park District and Friends of the Chicago River.

The environmentally minded rocker also mentioned how the dumping "is awful and it goes against so many principles we hold dear: environmentalism, accountability, and, mostly, principles of humanity."

DMB has fully cooperated with Cook County prosecutors, flying violinist Boyd Tinsley, who used the bus, from California to Chicago to help assist Windy City investigators.

No word whether Wohl will be behind the wheel for the band when it headlines the annual Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. The three-day camping and music festival, whose just announced lineup also includes Modest Mouse, Widespread Panic, Jack Johnson, the Allman Brothers Band and Alison Krauss and Union Station, takes place June 10-12 near Nashville.
