Director Guilty of Beating Farrah
James Orr--a writer, producer and director, whose credits include Three Men and a Baby, Mr. Destiny and Man of the House (where he met Fawcett)--could face up to a year in jail for the misdemeanor battery conviction.
The 44-year-old filmmaker was arrested in January following an early-morning Bel-Air brawl with Fawcett, 51. Orr was accused of choking and beating the onetime Charlie's Angel when she rejected his marriage proposal.
During the trial, prosecutors showed jurors pictures of a bloodied, bruised Fawcett taken after the fight. In her own emotional testimony, Fawcett described the incident. "I said, 'Stop, because it really hurts. I think I'm bleeding. Time out.' "
Meanwhile, Orr's lawyers portrayed the Extremities star as a physically abusive woman who terrorized the filmmaker. (Fawcett admitted in her testimony of smashing Orr's windows with a baseball bat and chasing him with a barstool.) Defense attorney Donald Wager even told jurors Fawcett's injuries were inflicted as his client defended himself. He expects to appeal the decision.
Jurors did acquit Orr of a second battery count relating to a 1997 spat.
Although Fawcett was not in the courtroom when the verdict was announced, her spokesperson said the actress "truly hopes that her sense of conviction sends a message to all battered women."
