Diller Dings Back, Skips Tonight

Phyllis Diller's funny bone's as healthy as ever—it's her back that causing the comedy icon some grief.

The legendary stand-up star postponed a planned July 17 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in honor of her 90th birthday after fracturing a disc in her back, manager Milt Suchin said Thursday.

"She did not break her back," he told E! Online, refuting earlier news reports. "She fractured either the vertebrae or the spine. It's a minor fracture but it's extremely painful."

But, Suchin adds, Diller remans "in great spirits and is doing okay."

The injury occurred at home, when Diller twisted her back the wrong way and felt a sharp twinge of pain.

Because Diller has a pacemaker, which was implanted after she suffered a heart attack at 81, doctors were unable to perform an MRI to figure out the exact nature of the fracture.

Diller knows from back problems. The entertainer suffered head and neck injuries two years ago after falling at her Brentwood estate, and, Suchin said, required surgery to fuse three vertebrae.

The latest mishap also forced Diller to nix an appearance this week at the Television Critics Association's meeting.

Diller retired from the stand-up scene in 2002, but is still active in showbiz.

She does Peter's mom on Fox's Family Guy, recently starred in five episodes of a new syndicated show called Jury Duty hosted by attorney Bruce Cutler (of John Gotti and Phil Spector defense fame), and provided the voice of Donkey in Blaze of Glory, an animated film costarring Debbie Reynolds made specifically for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

While Diller won't be celebrating her 90th on TV next Wednesday, she won't let the milestone pass unmarked.

"She's planning to go out for a private birthday diner with family and close friends," Suchin said.

Diller, a Tonight Show staple dating back to Johnny Carson's early tenure, will reschedule her appearance in a few weeks.

"We're definitely going to do it," said Suchin. "And do it on her 91st again as well."
