Deuce Bigalow, Overheated Gigolo
Too much prison food finally got the best of Rob Schneider.
The Deuce Bigalow thespian collapsed Wednesday on the set of his new movie, the misadventures-in-prison comedy Big Stan, and was treated at a nearby hospital for food poisoning and heat exhaustion, his publicist, Shara Koplowitz, confirmed.
"The combination of bad food and the heat just hit him," Koplowitz told the Associated Press Thursday. "He's back on the set directing today."
Schneider was nursed back to health at San Joaquin General Hospital and released the same day. His rep said that she didn't know what the questionable grub was that caused her client's tummy troubles.
Cameras have been rolling since June 17 at a women's prison near Stockton, the desert-climate San Joaquin Valley city where parts of Cool Hand Luke were shot. (Perhaps Schneider was trying to eat 50 eggs.) According to the Stockton Record, the area has been baking in 100-plus degree heat this week.
And the 42-year-old Schneider was not the first to feel its debilitating effects. The AP reported that firefighters had been called out to the set several times already to treat crew members for heat exhaustion.
Big Stan, Schneider's directorial debut, centers on a con man (played by the male gigolo himself) who is sent to prison on a fraud rap, but before he goes he enlists the help of a martial arts master who teaches him some wily moves to ward off fellow inmates "who want to hurt or love him," per IMDB.com.
Other notable names on board with Big Stan are David Carradine (the guru), House's Jennifer Morrison (as some really lucky lady) and Loveline's Dr. Drew Pinsky (as a presumably mild-mannered inmate).
About 150 local Stockton-ites are playing prison guards and tough-guy convicts in the film, as well.
"These are the best extras in the world," Schneider told the Record Friday, on what was another 100-degree day of filming. "I told one guy, we've got to put some tattoos on you?Oh, you've already got them, okay."
